WORKSHOPS

I LOVE GETTING FIBER INTO PEOPLES HANDS

Teaching people to work with their hands, and to use their brains in accord with what their hands are making, is a process. Because I am a full time professional maker, I offer students insights into this experience that aren't normally presented in workshops. As NUNO FELT COLLAGE and the SEWING OF HANDMADE/HANDWOVEN FABRICS are explored, so are design, efficiency and function.

MY DEDICATION TO EACH STUDENTS PROCESS STARTS BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF ANY WORKSHOP

Once you have signed up for one of my classes, I make contact via email to find out a bit about your creative interests and skill level. This helps me answer any questions you may have and to establish what the workshop parameters will be. Because each student has specific concerns, I make sure as much groundwork as possible is laid before the workshop actually begins. That allows students to articulate choices, and my workshops to be focused, productive and tailored to the participants.

I TEACH PROCESS

I present the Sewing of Handmade Fabrics in several different Focus Areas:

  • General Sewing, Compose & Combine/Piecing, ReDo/ReMake/ReCycle, and sewing Felted Fabrics.

  • NEW! The creation and sewing of RAG Fabrics. RAG fabrics are woven with commercial fabrics as weft, in a manner related to rag rug and Saki-Ori (Japanese rag) weaving. Multiple fabrics are cut into narrow bias strips and re-woven into a pliable and fuzzy, color-rich fabric.

In each Focus Area, general sewing principles and suggestions are made. Inspirational information regarding the Focus Area is also provided.

  • In all my workshops each student designs their OWN garment project.

  • You weave/make your fabric(s) prior to the workshop.

  • You select and test-fit your garment pattern prior to the workshop.

The goal of my workshops is for students to explore their creative interests and gain awareness of what they are doing while they are making. As this evolves students have realized a wide range of garment and accessory making accomplishments.
